About Us

Here at Dewsbury Pork & Pig Stud, we strive to provide the best possible environment for our pigs to ensure that you as the customer will get the absolute best and most ethically raised livestock or pork that there is to offer.

Located in the southern tablelands of N.S.W south of Goulburn, our main focus is to preserve and promote the Hampshire and Duroc breeds and their genetics within Australia. We are a stud that breeds Duroc and Hampshire pigs, both of which are critically rare breeds in Australia. We supply boars as terminal sires to farms all across Australia as well as stud stock to other breeders.

We keep a variety of bloodlines in both breeds, which ensures we are conserving the lines as well as having a diverse base of stock for other breeders to choose from.

We do not use farrowing crates or gestation crates. All our sows farrow in moveable shelters in paddocks or in our purpose built, deep straw bedded farrowing shed. This provides a safe, warm and high welfare environment for farrowing sows so they are not exposed to extremes of weather in cold or wet conditions. Gestating sows are fully free range in large, open paddocks with free access to pasture, shade, shelter and wallows.
Once weaned, all our pigs are grown outdoors in free to roam spacious paddocks. We do not dock tails, clip teeth or castrate any of our pigs. Our paddocks are rotated and cropped, allowing them to recover prior to re-stocking. All our pigs are fully vaccinated and wormed to ensure they are in the best possible health.

Our Practices

As our focus is to produce the highest quality pork and breeding stock, we feel that our practices must directly reflect our philosophy and be implemented in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and ensures that every single pig on our farm, no matter how long or short their stay, has the absolute best quality of life that we can provide for them.

We stock at a maximum of 10 dry sows to the hectare (or 5 sows with litters), and many paddocks are a much smaller stocking rate. Weaners are kept at a maximum of 40 to the hectare, and finishers are stocked at a maximum of 20 to the hectare. This minimizes the stress on our land, while providing the pigs with plenty of room to avoid overcrowding and confrontation.
Our paddocks are rotated regularly, with most paddocks containing pigs for only 6 months of the year. This helps to reduce disease and parasites, as well as giving the paddocks ample time to recuperate ground cover and grow forage crops for the pigs.
All of our pigs are vaccinated for erysipelas, leptospirosis, pavovirus (breeders only) and mycoplasma (HPV respisure vaccine). This ensures our pigs are as healthy as possible and anyone purchasing breeding stock can be assured that they have the best possible protection available.

We do not use any growth promoters, hormones or antibiotics in our feed. Pigs are only given antibiotics if needed for any illness or injury which is assessed on an individual basis.
